An Australian man who went viral for his iconic reaction to seeing himself on the big screen at the World Cup has explained the hilarious moment.

When he noticed cameras zoomed in on his face during the Australia-France match last Wednesday at the Al-Janoub Stadium in Qatar, his lips read: “Jesus, we’re on the f***ing tele.”

Many joked the man’s expression could easily be mistaken for someone who hadn’t been honest about where he was going, but he has set the record straight.

“I didn’t even realise I said it,” the Socceroos fan said in a clip that has surfaced on Reddit. “I was like oh, ‘Oh jesus, I’m on the f***ing tele.’

“Everyone’s like oh I wonder what happened? His wife’s … all this rubbish. It’s like yeah my partner knows I’m here, you know?

“Why it’s gone viral, I don’t really understand. I’m kind of scratching my head. I guess people are looking for an Australian moment that they can identify with.”

Australians have celebrated his “gold” reaction online, labelling it a typical Aussie moment.

“You can hear his accent without even hearing his accent,” a popular comment read.

“Can take the man out of Australia, but can’t take the Australian out of the man,” another joked.

The speculation he had been caught at a place he shouldn’t be included suggestion his partner was told he was away on business or he had told his boss he was off sick with Covid.

Unfortunately for the fan, France also landed a 4-1 knockout blow in the Socceroos’ tournament opener.

The reigning world champions were razor sharp and tore the Australian defence apart with the final four goals of the match.

Socceroos legend Harry Kewell said it ended up being an “easy” win for France as Australia’s tactics failed to put pressure on their opposition.

But things have got better since with the Socceroos through to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 2006.

It is also the first time the team has won two matches in any World Cup series.
