Matthew Edward Patricia is a football coach in the National Football League. He currently works for the New England Patriots as the senior football advisor and offensive line coach. Patricia is an American football player (NFL). He has worked as an assistant coach for the Patriots for a total of 15 seasons, not all of which have been consecutive. From 2012 to 2017, he was the team’s defensive coordinator for six of those seasons. Patricia led the Patriots to victory in three Super Bowls during his time with the team, including two as defensive coordinator. Under Patricia’s direction, the Patriots’ defense in 2016 allowed the fewest points of any team in the league. Since 2022, he has been the Patriots’ offensive play caller. His tenure with the team began in that year. Between his two stints as head coach of the New England Patriots, he led the Detroit Lions as head coach from 2018 through 2020.

Career as a Player for Matt Patricia

Between the years 1992 and 1995, Patricia was a member of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football team, where he earned a letter for each of the four years he played on the squad as a center and guard.

Matt Patricia Coaching Career

Patricia opted to continue his education at RPI and launch his career in coaching as a graduate assistant in the year 1996. Following that, he worked for Hoffman Air & Filtration Systems in East Syracuse, New York, as an application engineer for a period of two years. Following her graduation, Patricia was offered a position with Westinghouse Electric Company to maintain nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers; however, she declined the position in order to pursue her passion for football and was hired by Amherst College to coach the defensive line from 1999 to 2000. In 2001, he made the move to Syracuse University to take a position with the football club there as an offensive graduate assistant, a role that he played for all three seasons.

In 2004, the same year that the Patriots won their third Super Bowl, Patricia joined Bill Belichick’s staff with the Patriots as an offensive coaching assistant. Belichick was the head coach of the Patriots at the time. Patricia was relocated to the position of assistant offensive line coach for the Patriots in 2005, following the departure of Jeff Davidson, who held the dual role of coaching the offensive line and the tight ends. After the season was over, defensive coordinator Dean Pees was elevated to the position of linebackers coach, which resulted in Patricia being reassigned once again, this time to the position of linebackers coach for the 2006 season. In 2011, Patricia was given the role of safeties coach for the team.

Although he had been calling the plays on defense ever since Pees stepped down as defensive coordinator after the 2009 season, he was given the official title of defensive coordinator in 2012. Prior to that, he had held the position of defensive playcaller. Patricia was granted permission by the Patriots to interview for the head coaching post of the Cleveland Browns in January of 2016, however the Patriots informed Patricia that he will continue to serve as defensive coordinator for the Patriots moving forward into the 2016 season.

With Patricia, the Patriots were victorious in three Super Bowls: Super Bowl XXXIX, which took place at the conclusion of the 2004 season, Super Bowl XLIX, which took place at the conclusion of the 2014 season, and Super Bowl LI, which took place at the conclusion of the 2016 season. The news broke on NFL Black Monday, January 1, 2018, that Patricia has been under consideration for the head coaching positions with both the Detroit Lions and the New York Giants. To this day, he is the only defensive play caller on the Patriots’ roster to have been promoted to the position of defensive coordinator.

Patricia was formally introduced as the new head coach of the Detroit Lions on February 5, 2018. After reporters unearthed the fact that he had been indicted for sexual assault in 1996, his position came under intense criticism from the public in May of 2018. As a response to this, the president of the Detroit Lions, Rod Wood, initially declared “I have no idea what’s going on here,” she said, but a few hours later, she changed her tune and said, “I’m perfectly fine with the idea of interviewing Matt and hiring him.” I can tell you with a surety of one thousand percent that everything I’ve discovered about the man has verified what I already knew about him and that our choice to make him our head coach would not have been affected in any way by the new information.”

He started the 2018 season out with a pair of defeats, the first being against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football on September 10 by a score of 48–17, and the second coming against the San Francisco 49ers the following week on September 16 by a score of 30–27. On September 23, 2018, he led his new team to a 26–10 victory over his former team, the New England Patriots. In the process, Patricia was able to claim victory over his former mentor, Bill Belichick. This victory marked his first as a head coach. It was also the first time that the Lions had defeated the Patriots since Belichick’s debut season as head coach of the Patriots, which was the year 2000.

It was stated on January 22nd, 2021 that Patricia would be returning to the Patriots “in a number of roles.” It has been reported that Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Patricia are working out a role that is comparable to the one that Mike Lombardi had in New England, despite the fact that this is still a work in progress. The exact roles have not been specified. In addition to this, it is anticipated that Patricia would contribute to other projects and serve as a resource to Belichick. The Patriots made the announcement that Patricia would be taking on the role of senior football advisor and offensive line coach on July 21, 2022.
