London: A London hospital on Saturday withdrew support from 12-year-old British boy Archie Battersbee after his parents lost a long, emotional and divisive legal battle.

Archies mother, Hollie Dance, said her son died two hours after the ventilator was turned off.

Such a beautiful little boy. He fought until the end, he told reporters, crying, outside the Royal London Hospital.

Im the proudest mother in the world, said Dance, after spending the night at her bedside with other relatives.

Dance found Archie passed out at home in April with signs of a noose around his neck, possibly after taking part in an online suffocation challenge.

At the entrance of an east London hospital, well-wishers left flowers and cards, lit candles in the shape of the letter A.

My boy is 12, hes Archies age, and this puts things into perspective, said Shelley Elias, 43, after dropping off her donations at the site early Saturday.

I didnt know what to write because there are no words to end the pain, she said.

A judge in June agreed with doctors that Archie was brain dead, and allowed life support to be ended, but the family fought the courts to overturn it.

Arguing that Archie could benefit from treatment in Italy or Japan, they took their case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which this week declined to intervene.

The parents also lost a last-ditch legal bid to have Archie transferred to a hospice for his final hours.

All legal channels have been exhausted, a spokesman for the campaign organization Christian Concern, which has been supporting the family, said on Friday.

The family are devastated and are spending precious time with Archie.

Charlies Law

The case is the latest in a series that has pitted parents against Britains legal and healthcare systems.

The involvement of groups such as Christian Concern in supporting desperate parents has drawn criticism for increasing the pain of all involved.

Such groups often serve their own purposes, according to Dominic Wilkinson, a professor of ethics at the University of Oxford.

They may have different political or other views, (and) they have reason to want to tell parents things that may not be accurate, he told Sky.

After a fierce battle between the hospital and his parents, 23-month-old Alfie Evans died in April 2018 when doctors in Liverpool, in northwest England, withdrew life support.

His parents were supported by Pope Francis to take him to a clinic in Rome, but he lost the final court decision before he died.

Charlie Gard, born in August 2016 with a rare mitochondrial disease that causes progressive muscle weakness, died one week before his first birthday after doctors withdrew his life support.

His parents have been fighting a five-month battle for Charlie to be taken to the United States for experimental treatment, gaining support from US president Donald Trump and evangelical groups.

Parents have been pressing the UK government to adopt Charlies Law, a proposed law that would strengthen parents rights when disputes arise over the treatment of their children.

The whole program is tied to us, said Archies mother Dance on Friday, with many on social media questioning her actions and the familys fundraising.

Change must come through Charlies Law so that no parent has to face this.
