NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal stands by the inflammatory comments he made about Australia’s Ben Simmons, questioning the severity of the back injury that is keeping him out of action.

Speaking to Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, O’Neal – who was highly critical of Simmons following his blockbuster trade to the 76ers – said he was unwilling to reverse his judgment unless He doesn’t hear the Nets guard himself.

“When you give people the ability to speculate, they’re going to speculate on their own,” he said.

“If I said something hurtful, maybe he should call me and be like, ‘Hey, you said that.’ I’m smart enough to stop time and say, ‘Okay, when did I say that?’ And then I go, ‘You know what, that wasn’t right.’”

O’Neal said a mix of theories and facts around Simmons’ herniated disc, subsequent surgery and recovery period informed his comments.

“At the moment we are just speculating – and some facts, because I have people where he is. So I know a lot and see a lot. But he hasn’t said why he is. don’t play,” he said. .

After being traded to the Nets in February, Simmons missed the remainder of the 2021-22 season with the complaint on his back. He underwent a successful microdiscectomy earlier this month, shortly after the Nets were swept by the Celtics in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

O’Neal was scathing about Simmons’ absence in April, when the three-time All-Star was set to return for part of the Nets-Celtics series.

“In the hood, we call it a punk movement,” O’Neal said during an edition of “Inside the NBA” on TNT.

“You know, when things are going well, ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to play in Game 4.’ Now that [the Nets] lost, ‘I have a bad back.’ Well, if you have back pain, take some Icy Hot. I will send it to you (as an endorser).
