Cristiano Ronaldo has stated that Manchester United are ‘one or two steps’ behind the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City after firing shots at the Ralf Rangnick appointment, as he told Piers Morgan in his tell-all interview.

The 2022 World Cup might be around the corner, but it’s the Portugal superstar that is grabbing the headlines for his recent interview regarding his time at Manchester United.

Ronaldo returned to Premier League shores last summer when Ole Gunnar Solskjær was in the Old Trafford dugout, but he was sacked by November after a dismal run, and on a temporary basis, replaced by the now-Austria coach, Ralf Rangnick.

Given Man United’s decline since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, things have gone very downhill for the three-time European Cup winners and Ronaldo feels calls, such as bringing in people like Rangnick to the club, have played a part in that.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also used the ‘success’ of other clubs, like Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, as an example of his current club falling behind.

“Since Sir Alex Ferguson left, I haven’t seen an evolution at the club,” said Ronaldo. “The progress was zero.

“For example, we have an interesting point as to how the club, like Manchester United, after sacking Ole, they bring Ralf Rangnick, which is something nobody understands. This guy isn’t even a coach. A big club like Manchester United bring a Sport Director, surprise not only me, but all the world.

“Of course (it was a ridiculous decision), we have to be honest, if you’re not even a coach, then how are you going to be the boss of Manchester United?

“It’s something that I should say that Manchester United hasn’t followed the right way to reach success, like other teams, for example, Liverpool, Manchester City or Chelsea. They are one step behind or two. It’s because of these kinds of mistakes, in my opinion.”

There might be some aspects of Ronaldo’s interview that will wind fans up, and in truth, the media will probably hype things up as much as possible.

But one thing that can’t be denied is that, during these past ten years, Man United haven’t been able to match what Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have achieved.

Some have been far more successful than others, but there has still been success at those clubs, including Premier League titles for all three and European Cup wins for those on Merseyside and in West London.

The best Man United have had to contend with is the Europa League and the FA Cup.
