The actress recently appeared on Today with Savannah Guthrie to promote the memoir, titled Mean Baby. She revealed that it dives deep into her decades-long struggle with alcoholism.
Selma Had Her First Drink Earlier Than Age 7
While the Cruel Intentions star said her first experience being drunk was at the age of 7, she admits to trying alcohol even earlier on. “My first [time] drunk [was] when I was 7. I had my first drinks much younger,” she shared, TMZ notes.
During the appearance, Selma added that she’s been sober since 2016 following an incident where she lost consciousness while on a flight with her then-4-year old son after drinking too much.

She also opened up about the subject in a recent interview with PEOPLE Magazine, explaining alcohol helped her survive her traumatic childhood despite developing a dependency later in life.
“I don’t know if I would’ve survived childhood without alcoholism,” she said. “That’s why it’s such a problem for a lot of people. It really is a huge comfort, a huge relief in the beginning. Maybe even the first few years for me because I did start really young with that as a comfort, as my coping mechanism.”
The publication also revealed an excerpt from Selma’s memoir, which releases on May 17th, in which she discusses first getting drunk at age 7.
“The first time I got drunk it was a revelation. I always liked Passover,” the Legally Blonde star writes. “As I took small sips of the Manischewitz I was allowed throughout the seder a light flooded through me, filling me up with the warmth of God.”
“But the year I was seven, when we basically had Manischewitz on tap and no one was paying attention to my consumption level […] I got drunk that night,” Selma continued. “Very drunk. Eventually, I was put in my sister Katie’s bed with her. In the morning, I didn’t remember how I’d gotten there.”
