Maggie Smith, who was born on December 28, 1934 in Essex, began studying acting at the Oxford Playhouse when she was 16 years old. She made her stage debut as Viola in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in 1952. She made her film and Broadway debuts in 1956, with Child in the House and New Faces of ’56, respectively. Her first of 17 BAFTA nominations were for the film Nowhere to Go in 1958.
