The Times dropped something of a bombshell on Thursday morning as they reported that Julian Ward is set to leave Liverpool.

The Sporting Director only took over from Michael Edwards this summer, but he’s already had enough of being the Reds’ transfer chief and has decided to leave at the end of the season.

Ward’s departure has shook Liverpool a little bit, and now, they’re considering completely scrapping the role of Sporting Director.

The Guardian claim that the higher-ups at Anfield are considering the future of the role, but they interestingly note that Jurgen Klopp is a fan of this set-up, stating that he likes working alongside a Sporting Director.

Of course, the idea of a Sporting Director or a Director of Football is a rather new idea in this country, but over in Klopp’s native Germany, this has been the way football works for quite some time.

If Liverpool do indeed scrap the idea of a Sporting Director, Jurgen Klopp will likely have a much more overarching role as a manager, and it will be interesting to see how the squad is built entirely in his vision.

Of course, Michael Edwards and Ward have worked closely with Klopp in recent years on recruitment, but if the German has 100 per cent control over signings and departures, we could see a different approach going forward.

With the footballing world being so data-driven these days, having this sort of system is rare, but going back to basics may be exactly what Liverpool need to do in order to revamp this squad that is clearly getting towards the end of its peak years.

This would be a drastic change, but things could revert back to the norm rather quickly under new ownership. Let’s not forget that Liverpool are currently up for sale, and any new owner may have their own approach and point of view on how the club should be run.
