Lee Hendrie claims Aston Villa transfer target Eden Hazard is ‘nowhere near’ his best and he is underperforming, with injuries being a factor.
When Hazard departed the Premier League stage in 2019 for Real Madrid, he left Chelsea as one of the best forwards in the club’s history and one of the best players to have graced English football.
But, since then, it has gone downhill for the 31-year-old – he has only played 71 games in all competitions during that period for the Spanish giants, scoring only seven goals, with visits to the treatment room being a regular occurrence.

Added to that, he only played 98 minutes of football in La Liga this season, yet Roberto Martinez opted to start him during Belgium’s opening two World Cup games, where the whole team and Hazard himself, looked well off it.
There is talk of a return to the Premier League being on the cards, with Aston Villa’s name getting a mention, and he does have less than 18 months left on his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
When talking about this Belgium squad at the Qatar World Cup, which promoted a war-of-words between teammates Jan Vertonghen and Kevin de Bruyne, former Villa man Hendrie spoke about Hazard’s situation, as he told Sky Sports News.
“You look at Belgium on paper and they look a fantastic side,” said Hendrie. “Yes, they have aged and have injuries, for sure.
“When Lukaku is fit. He is a danger and a threat. Hazard has been nowhere near his best because of injuries. There are lots of players who are underperforming, they haven’t had minutes and their fitness levels are nowhere near what they should be.”

VILLA SHOULD LOOK ELSEWHERE
On paper, it seems like a magical signing for Villa and their new boss, Unai Emery, but in truth, it’s one they should stay away from.
With Leon Bailey the one cooking during these early few weeks under Emery, given that he is now starting to use the wide players properly, then a few more of those types of players will be needed via the transfer market.
Yes, experienced players who have been in Europe and done it would be ideal, but not someone who has declined at the rate Hazard has declined.
