In 2007, former “Voice” coach Kelly Clarkson was quite famous after being the inaugural American Idol winner in 2002. Her debut single “A Moment Like This” reached number one in the US billboard Hot 100 chart in the same year. After numerous other chart successes, Clarkson won Grammys in 2006 for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Vocal Performance. reports Grammy.com.

Does Clarkson owe her in-laws millions of dollars?

So when Clarkson signed with Starstruck Management in 2007, she was already a superstar. Starstruck Management is owned by Clarkson’s former father-in-law, Narvel Blackstock. Through her work with the agency, she met her now-ex-husband and father of her children, Brandon Blackstock. The couple divorced in 2020 but have ongoing legal battles of their own.

Aside from that, Clarkson’s former in-laws are trying to sue the 40-year-old pop culture icon for millions of dollars for being responsible for her fame and success. According to legal documents obtained by Heavy, Starstruck management claims that “Starstruck agreed in 2007 to manage Clarkson’s career. Like any other customer, Starstruck invested a great deal of time, money, energy and dedication in Clarkson. Over the course of around thirteen years, Starstruck turned Clarkson into a mega-superstar.

Starstruck’s attorneys allege that Clarkson now owes the management company millions of dollars in commissions not only for what they did for her in the 13 years between her signing with them and her divorce from Blackstock, but also for any future earnings .

According to peopleBlackstocks’ attorneys, stated in 2020, “It is unfortunate that Kelly is once again attempting to avoid paying due commissions owed to Starstruck in an attempt to gain a perceived advantage in her ongoing child custody and divorce proceedings.”

Clarkson fights back with a counter suit

Clarkson insists she doesn’t owe Starstruck anything, and she doesn’t back down. In fact, she has filed a countersuit, claiming that not only are the Blackstocks’ claims false, but also their authority to practice as talent agents. reports The Sun.

The talk show host said both Brandon and Narvel Blackstock “acted as unlicensed talent agents, which they denied.” The outlet also reports that Clarkson “accuses them of violating the California Labor Code by ‘obtaining, offering, promising, or attempting to obtain jobs or engagements.’”

In addition, Clarkson has requested that “all agreements — including their verbal agreement in which they agreed to pay them 15 percent commission on their gross earnings — be declared ‘void and unenforceable,’” the outlet reports.

Although Starstruck’s original lawsuit was filed in 2020, it’s likely that it will continue for at least another year. A new judge has been appointed, the Honorable Wendy Chang, who likely contributes to the delay.

However, Clarkson’s ex, Brandon Blackstock, who is also the son of country music star Reba McEntire, has been known for protracting lawsuits. Case in point: Issues related to the couple’s marriage ending still find their way into the courtroom. Her recent fight even prompted her judge to delay his resignation in order to continue working on her case.

The next hearing in the Starstruck case isn’t even happening this year, according to The Sun – it’s now set for March 27, 2023.
