Emma Raducanu said she was “extremely grateful” for her MBE after it was presented to her by the King on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old athlete beamed as she posed for photos after accepting the honor for her services to tennis at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

She was made a member of the Order of the British Empire after winning the US Open in 2021 aged just 18.

By defeating Canadian – and fellow teen – Leylah Fernandez, she made history as the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade’s Wimbledon win in 1977.

In a statement following the ceremony, she said: “It was great to receive my honor from His Majesty the King today – I am extremely grateful.”

Although Emma made history by winning the US Open, she recently revealed that she didn’t see the success as a “big deal”.

Speaking to Grazia magazine, she admitted, “It wasn’t a big deal for my family – it was like a normal Friday or Saturday night.”

She continued, “I’ve never dated. I never did any normal teenage stuff. It takes a bit of getting used to between training and travelling, but I like being alone and it’s always about the whole.”

Emma added that she finds Andy Murray a “good conversationalist” for any issues and concerns she has as he comes from a similar background.

After struggling with the pressures of “single sport,” she found solace in conversation with Andy, who, like herself, found international fame as a teenager, winning the Junior US Open in 2004 and turning pro at age 17.

Meanwhile, Labor MP Dame Nia Griffith, who accepted her honor at the same investiture ceremony, said of the tennis star: “It’s fantastic to see a young person (achieve) the success that they’ve had and I do think now she obviously faces incredibly challenging situation to cope with this success and also to cope with disappointments.

“And I certainly think it’s wonderful to see young people being recognized and rewarded and let’s make sure we give every young person the opportunities to develop their talents to the fullest.”

Also on Tuesday, Sir Isaac Julien, the Turner Prize-nominated artist and filmmaker, was awarded a knighthood for services to diversity and inclusion in the arts.

Former footballer Gary Bennett, patron of the group Show Racism The Red Card, was among the other MBE recipients and former Test cricketer Hugh Morris. The batsman was awarded an MBE for services to cricket and charity.
