In the original version of the Obi-Wan Kenobi script, Ewan McGregor’s Jedi Master lost his rematch duel with his former Padawan, Darth Vader.
Darth Vader won in the rematch against Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original story for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ewan McGregor reprised his fan-favorite Star Wars role in this Disney+ miniseries for the first time since the prequel trilogy wrapped up. This time, the Jedi Master’s arc showed him a decade after Order 66, at his most vulnerable.

Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi project went through several iterations. Initially, it was supposed to be a movie as part of Star Wars’ anthology series, which was eventually cancelled following the lackluster box office of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Through its many stages, several creators also got themselves involved, offering their respective takes on what the Jedi Master’s arc would be. This includes that ofObi-Wan Kenobiwriter Stuart Beattie, who wrote the script for the first of three planned movies about the character. His story was eventually reformatted to become the Disney+ show, albeit with some changes.

Now that the Obi-Wan Kenobi show has finally wrapped up, Beattie opens up about his version of the much-anticipated Obi-Wan Darth Vader rematch in a new interview with The Direct. According to him, in his script, the Sith Lord won. While the Empire didn’t find Obi-Wan’s body, they presumedhimdead. Meanwhile, even without the conversation they had in the Disney+ series, the encounter left the Jedi Master with the realization that Anakin Skywalker was truly gone, his Darth Vader persona having taken over. Read Beattie’s full quote below:
In mine, Vader won the fight. They were fighting on this space station. It was falling apart in the atmosphere of this big planet and Obi-Wan basically fell off. Vader pushed him off and they separated. They didn’t get the chance to find Obi-Wan, basically. But what was going through Obi-Wan’s mind is the same thing which is, ‘My brother is truly dead. He’s gone. And while I absolve of that guilt because I didn’t kill him, Vader killed him, I’m still just devastated. I’m absolutely devastated.’
In the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Obi-Wan ultimately emerged victorious against his former Padawan. During their initial fight in the show back in episode 3, he was clearly overpowered by Darth Vader, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he was still processing the news that Anakin Skywalker survived and became the terrifying Sith Lord, and secondly, he was mostly disconnected from the Force following years of hopelessness. While Obi-Wanultimatelywon against Darth Vader in the finale, Lucasfilm found a way to explain why the Empire never hunted down the Jedi Master. Emperor Palpatine dissuaded Darth Vader from further pursuing him, afraid that any additional contact with him would bring back Anakin.
It’s worth noting thatBeattie’s take on the Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader fight would have also created a Star Wars plot hole. In A New Hope, the Sith Lord famously told his former Jedi Master that the last time they met, he was but a learner, indicating that he lost during that fight. Had Darth Vader won in his encounter with Obi-Wan in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, it would have directly contradicted this particular line.

Accidental movie and TV fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for procedurals and old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!) but won’t dare watch any horror films although shes (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
