Darius Slayton scores the winning goal in 2020.

New York Giants fans definitely had a honeymoon with Darius Slayton during his 2019 rookie campaign. The fifth-round pick caught 48 touchdowns in 740 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games while dropping just two passes.

Slayton will have 50 receptions in 2020 – twice more than 48 in 2019 – but in two more. His production went down even further last season, scoring 26 visits in 13 games. He also has six drops in each of the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

There is reason to believe that Slayton is spendable, and the Giant shows signs of possibly continuing with him. According to The Athletic’s Dan Duggan, the Giants shopped Slayton before the 2022 NFL draft.

When Sterling Shepard returns from his torn Achilles injury, Slayton projects as the fifth wide receiver in the Giants attack, featuring Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney and second rookie Wan’ Dale Robinson.

If Slayton is dealt with, there is a potential destination for the 25-year-old that could mislead Giants fans.

Slayton In-Division Commercial Scenario Transaction

Brian Martin of SB Nation’s Blogging the Boys wrote an article about the wide range of “talented” recorders that the Dallas Cowboys could acquire through commerce. The Cowboys have lost widespread recipient James Washington, who was ejected from the field during a training session at training camp on Monday, August 1. Dallas announced that he injured his foot fracture, which would have to be. Leave him for six to 10 weeks.

One of the proposed recipients is for Slayton.

Martin believes Slayton’s ability to catch the ball deep – similar to that in Washington – is why the Cowboys should trade for him.

“There have been rumors circulating that a few Giants recipients, Darius Slayton and Kadarius Toney, are being transferred to teams seeking more WR assistance,” Martin wrote. As far as the Cowboys are concerned, both players can help with their own WR positions. Slayton is a deep threat like James Washington before the injury, while Toney is a more utility player. Of the two, Darius Slayton is probably the most sensible.

Dallas also extensively trades the Amari Cooper receiver during the off-season. They were expecting Michael Gallup to miss the start of the season as he was recovering from a torn ACL.

Currently, the top four Cowboys wide receivers on the depth chart are Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb, Jalen Tolbert, Noah Brown, TJ Vasher.

Current Slayton Situation

While the Giants are currently in rebuild mode, it’s unlikely that the team will trade any wide receiver depth for the Cowboys, especially with a hot rival.

However, it was reported by Duggan that Slayton ran with the third team in training camp. Slayton’s future in New York did not look promising, especially with reporters that he could be unexpectedly cut back in June.

Still, there is a risk of injury at the recipient site. Golladay, Toney and Shepard all have history of injuries as all three were absent last season. Slayton’s experience with full-back Daniel Jones would make him a good choice in that situation.

The giant likely won’t be able to profit much from dealing with Slayton either. He was drafted initially in the fifth round, and his value is likely to be worse.

It would make the most sense to see how he did in the first three pre-season games and gauge his future from there.
