(Updated 8:20 a.m.) Local officials are urging drivers to avoid the area around the Route 7 intersection with Claiborne Parkway. That’s because a tanker truck overturned there this morning.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation, the truck was carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel. It overturned on one of the cloverleaf entrance/exit ramps connecting to the highway.
Specifically, it was the eastbound entrance ramp to 7 for traffic southbound on Claiborne. That ramp remains closed.
At one point, reports said traffic on Route 7 was closed in both directions. However, now the VDOT is indicating that westbound lanes are open while eastbound traffic is restricted to the left lane and left shoulder.
As of 8 a.m., eastbound traffic on Route 7 was backed up roughly four miles, stretching nearly to Battlefield Parkway. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
An empty tanker truck is on its way in order to remove the fuel from the overturned truck. But fire department officials are estimating that the process and clean up from the accident will take several hours.
