Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is looking to sign Calvin Bassey in the summer transfer window, according to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers The Telegraph.

The report has claimed that Villa would like a new left-back to give Lucas Digne competition and Rangers youngster Bassey is one of the players Gerrard is said to be targeting.

Interestingly, Gerrard worked with the 22-year-old, who can play at left-back or centre-back, when he was Rangers manager.

In fact, the Liverpool legend has publicly praised the Nigeria international in the past.

Gerrard told the Rangers official site in June 2020: “He is a strong and dynamic athlete, who corresponds completely to the modern full-back.

“He will continue to develop and we are delighted to have added another strong addition to our group.

“He’s left-footed, physically strong and likes to go forward and is certainly equipped to thrive in the competitive nature of Scottish football.”

Could Calvin leave Bassey Rangers for Aston Villa?

If Aston Villa make a tempting offer, we think Rangers could sell Calvin Bassey and the Nigerian himself might want to move to Villa Park.

Villa is a big and well-established club in the Premier League that could take a place under Liverpool legend Gerrard.

Bassey is a regular in the Rangers first-team, so it’s likely Villa will have to pay a decent transfer fee and give the 22-year-old a strong place

The Nigeria international has given two assists in 26 Scottish Premiership games this season.

Bassey has also made 11 starts and made two substitute appearances in the Europa League for Rangers this season.
